What are CPEs?

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits are units that professionals earn by participating in educational programs designed to maintain and enhance their skills and knowledge. CPEs help ensure that professionals stay current with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.

Why do CPEs exist?

CPE credits exist to promote lifelong learning and professional development. They ensure that individuals in regulated fields, such as internal auditing, accounting, and finance, continue to meet the professional standards and competencies required to perform their roles effectively.

Who uses CPEs?

CPEs are primarily used by professionals in regulated industries, including:

  • Internal auditors
  • Certified Public Accountants (CPAs)
  • Financial auditors and compliance officers
  • Other professionals required to maintain certification or licensure

Employers, licensing boards, and professional associations often require CPE credits for maintaining certifications, licenses, or professional standing.

How the IIA manages CPEs

At the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), we provide accredited educational programs to help professionals earn CPE credits. Here’s how we manage the process:

  • Attendance at IIA conferences is recorded through on-site badge scanning at each session entrance for in-person attendees, and automatically tracked by live watch time for virtual event participants.
  • Our educational programs are designed to comply with the IIA’s International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
  • The IIA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education.

CPE Certificate Delivery

At the IIA, we value our customers and make every effort to process and issue CPE certificates within 15 business days of the event. Certificates will be emailed to the address used during registration.

Tip: Please check your Spam or Junk folder if you do not see the certificate in your inbox.

Note: If you have not received your CPE Certificate after 15 business days, please submit a ticket to Customer Support.
